It almost seems silly. Every single year I sit down and write down some of the things I want to accomplish in the following months, but I actually never really manage to do a lot. Writing goals already became a tradition - not reaching a lot of them at the end of the year as well. This year I want to change that up a bit (and I believe I'm also not the only one who says that every year). But I realized that it's not about my procrastination, but about the goals I set. My goals were always hard to reach and actually needed a year of determination to be fulfilled. Sometimes all it takes is a little change of the way you set them for them to actually be reachable.
#1 Choose a word that describes your year
I've heard about this practice in a lot of books and youtube videos and I just love how it can actually help making your new year more organized and instantly set the tone. You can either choose a word or a sentence (like a book title) that should describe your year and set that at the beginning of your resolutions. Choosing a title for your year can actually influence your mindset and therefor help you reach your goals for the year. You can go as broad or specific as you'd like. My personal favorites for 2019 would be "change", "learning" and "skills" as I really want to work on widening my knowledge and changing up my routines and I still have to decide between those.
#2 limit your goals
I know as you always want the new year to be "your year" limiting your goals doesn't really sound like the right way to go. I actually loved to have a whole list of things I want to accomplish in the new year. It was just kind of fun to write all those things down. Anyway, it's actually better to choose some things you REALLY want to accomplish this year. Picking your favorite 3-6 goals is not only beneficial for actually seeing where your priorities are, but you also won't be as overwhelmed by all the things you want to get done, so you can really focus on your top goals for the year and always keep them in the back of your mind.
#3 create a structure
As I mentioned above, limiting your goals has a lot of benefits. My favorite is actually that you can put more work and effort into the things you really want to reach. That means, you won't have to limit yourself to those three goals you've chosen before, but you can actually split them up into a bunch of smaller goals to reach during the year. That way you won't lose sight of your goals (since you have a mini goal to reach every month) and you'll have some smaller steps to go, which makes everything more bearable. Let's just say my goal would be to blog more in 2019. My "mini goals" would then be uploading 4 times a month. That way, I already have a relation what "more" means and I am motivated to work each month, instead of rushing it all towards November.
#4 create a to do list
So, if we take the last tip even further we could not only create smaller goals to reach during the year, but also a to do list that shows the concrete steps that need to be taken in order to reach your goal. Continuing on the last example, I would create a to do list of the following: write the text, create or research images, visit Pinterest once a day, take care of your blog daily, ... These would actually be some steps that I 'd need to tae in order to keep blogging regularly. Of course, there's a lot more to it, but I believe you get the idea. By splitting your goals into tasks you again make them more bearable, easier to reach and harder to procrastinate.
#5 just do it
Depending on what your final goals are, it may be easier, or harder to find some "sub goals" or to dos. One thing that definitely applies to every goal, would be to just go and do something in order to reach it. This may seem trivial, but just simply doing things for about 10- 30 minutes a day (which you do have, even if you're stressed) you'll be surprised about all the things you can get done in just a few days. I know that there are days when you just totally don't feel like it (been there done that and I am currently super stressed, so still working on it), but those are the days I just like to sit downstairs a timer and literally do ANYTHING that has to do with my goal. By forcing myself to do anything for 25 minutes ( I love to use pomodoro timers for that) I will actually get into a flow quite quickly and as the timer is running, my productivity rises (as I do have kind of a deadline).
#6 plan your days
As you may or may not know, I'm actually a huge fan of planners. I do plan my days ahead on my iPad, my planner (though I use it less this year as it's too big for my bag) and my digital bullet journal. Planning your year is a crucial step if you actually want to reach your goals this year. I would actually recommend writing your goals down at the beginning of your planner or bullet journal and then creating some pages for your "mini goals", so you won't lose track of them either. Just that simple step of planning ahead or just writing it out adds some kind of seriousness to your goal and again helps to keep it in focus.
